St. John Donkeys


Donkeys were once hard workers on St. John along with African slaves. They were both imported to work on sugar plantations in the 1700’s. When sugar mills went out of business. Donkeys were kept but eventually free to roam when cars became the main source of transportation. We see donkeys on island today and don’t think too much about their historical ties, as well as the impact they have on island terrain. How do you feel about donkeys on St. John?
